One day we'll all be free...

Recently, there was an article in the paper, or was it on the ticker tape at the bottom of the news channel...where you find the "real" news?  Anyway, in the Essence article the exact heading read:

"The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed a lawsuit against a company that refused to hire a woman because she wouldn't cut her dreadlocks."

Huh?  Are we still being judged on what's on our head rather than of what's in it?  Is it not enough to be qualified for a job/position to gain employment, if you're Black?  What's next...will it be illegal to be Black in the workplace?

Of course, these are facetious questions.  We all know the answers, right?  The reality is that there are different answers depending on the day, location and audience being queried.  If you're a woman wearing natural hair you've had the discussion, the questions, the glares and stares from the moment you made your decision.  "Are you sure you want to do that?  What about your job, your man, your mom?"  For most of us, we've "won the battle" and have been able to go on about our lives without much fallout.  But with precedent setting lawsuits, such as this, it's a definite signal that now, more than ever, we must demand the right to wear our natural hair, if that's our choice.  Yes, the freedom of choice to be natural, to be free, to BE!

"African American women in the work place today are still dealing with the perception that certain things we do make us too ethnic."  JoAnne Cornwell (That Hair Thing)

Until we demand the freedom to choose for ourselves, we will never be free.  That is the Black woman "freedom of choice" movement.

Now, you would think that, in 2016, we would have more significant things to worry about than how a Black woman styles her hair.  For instance, shouldn't some judge somewhere determine whether one or more of the presidential candidates is prepared for, capable of and qualified for the job?  But no, a Black woman with dreadlocks is a more important issue to deal with and she can even be denied employment which means she's denied the right to earn a living, provide for her family, etc.  And for what?  A haircare system/style of choice.  It's really unbelievable to think that this one slipped through the cracks.

At Sisterlocks, we are dedicated to providing opportunities:  wearing Sisterlocks, doing Sisterlocks, and supporting Sisterlocks wearers and enthusiasts.  Our training opportunities produce the best natural hair care professionals around.  Our Trainees and Certified Consultants provide a service that is literally a rite of passage for their clients and we take this responsibility very seriously - so seriously in fact, that we often find that we're our client's biggest supporters, their "counselor," and strategist!

Grant it, the article stated "dreadlocks" but let's get real:  there can be no divisiveness amongst lock wearers.  Period.  We're stronger together!

What are your thoughts?  Did you have resistance in the workplace when you locked your hair?

"All my life I've had to fight..."

It seems like, "all my life I've had to fight!"  I had to fight my naps.  Everybody knows I had to fight the State for the right to do Sisterlocks, my way.  And another big fight has been to get you to see that Sisterlocks products are the best thing for your Sisterlocks.  I'm gonna need you to know that...before it's too late!

Avoid build-up, by any means necessary!  The damage caused by using non-Sisterlocks products is best avoided because trying to get rid of build-up is an arduous task.  If you find your locks are mushy, packed with lint and/or ooze a discolored liquid when you gently squeeze them after shampooing...you've got build-up.

The remedy:  The best thing you can do is step away from the products you've been using and turn to the Sisterlocks Starter Shampoo.  It's a clarifying shampoo and will help to break down the product build-up.  Apply the Starter Shampoo to wet hair and work into suds, making certain the product covers the length of the locks.  Leave on for about 10 minutes, rinse.  Apply shampoo again, suds like normal and rinse thoroughly.  Do this for several weeks and discontinue the use of the heavy, oil-based products that caused the build-up.  In fact, you may want to avoid using anything but Starter, for a while.  Eventually, you'll be able to add Sisterlocks moisturizers and other shampoo formulas, however, a sudsing with the Starter is still advised every 4-6 weeks or prior to a re-tightening.

*The photos above document the experience of an innocent victim who was unaware of using some of the popular products promoted by the unknowing.  Don't let this be your story or your client’s experience.  Stock up!
I wish you well!  I'd like to take my boxing gloves off!  #stayclean #lessismore #SLPRODUCTSRULE

It happened again and I’m amazed that when it happens, it still surprises me! We received a call at Sisterlocks Home Office from a Sisterlocks wearer, we’ll call her “Betty,” who was unaware of the Sisterlocks web site and that there was a full line of Sisterlocks products. How on earth can this happen in 2016? Well, Betty saw someone in the mall wearing Sisterlocks and was given their Consultant’s contact information. That’s a wonderful way to find out about Sisterlocks. What happens next, is not the way things should happen.
Betty contacted the Consultant and made an appointment to get Sisterlocks. After the locking session appointment the Consultant told Betty about a hair care product that “she loves” and uses on her Sisterlocks. <arg> Betty, who was so happy to have Sisterlocks and she trusted the person who put them in to educate her properly. Fast forward and a few months later Betty met another Sisterlocks wearer who expressed concerns about Betty’s hair and referred her to another Consultant for a second opinion.
Betty made an appointment for a “mini consultation” and discovered that she didn’t have Sisterlocks, at all! She also found out that her locks had product build-up caused by the non-Sisterlocks products she had been advised to use. Betty was shown official Sisterlocks materials and products and the web site. This is what should happen at a Sisterlocks consultation, in addition to sample locks and maintenance education and so much more.
Sisterlocks is a trademarked hair care system, complete with training on steps required to do them correctly. Our trained Consultants and Trainees are required to offer their services as they have been taught. We have on-going advanced education and specially formulated products to address the hair and scalp needs of Sisterlocks wearers.
When you meet with a Sisterlocks Consultant, by referral or otherwise, always check the Sisterlocks web site www.sisterlocks.com to confirm that the person is listed on either the Certified Consultant or Trainee Registry. Also, read our online information packet http://www.sisterlocks.com/online-i.... Finally, please refrain from using non-Sisterlocks products on your Sisterlocks as that is a recipe for disaster. Build-up (lint, dirt, grit, etc.) is best avoided rather than try to get rid of it.
The Sisterlocks system is taught the way it’s taught because we deserve better than someone spying and bootlegging a technique that was designed to empower us natural hair wearers. We deserve better!
