Greetings from Dr. Cornwell
It just hit me that the Sisterlocks Company is really 30 years old! What an opportunity for us to do some really special things ALL YEAR LONG! I'm thinking we should focus on a different theme or activity each month. That would be a fun way to shed light on some of the many amazing things that we've been involved in through the years. I can't think of a better place to begin than with our unique, and sometimes controversial logo.
So, where did that Sisterlocks Logo come from anyway???

Most people love it, but I have heard comments that some people wish our logo was something with a bit more of an 'ethnic' look. Hmmm! Read on, because I want to share with you why this logo for me is - and always has been - simply irresistible! It's like the image is about to take flight. In fact, we have affectionately named her the "Flying Lady."
Here's the brief story of her birth:
From the beginning (1993) we knew that Sisterlocks was here to stay, so we needed a logo. We took a bunch of pictures and our limited design ideas to a friend and graphic artist, Jan Carpenter. She took one look at the picture below of me goofing off while the photographer was shooting, and asked why we needed to look any further? Jan took out her pen, traced around the figure, and the rest is history. The Flying Lady was born!

I have to say though, that I wasn't really goofing off. I was trying to express what it felt like for me to have Sisterlocks. I was FREE! I was ME, and not trying to be anyone else. I had let go of a weight that I had been carrying my whole life, and I really could FLY!
Flying Lady Sightings!
Over the years I have witnessed many, many Flying Lady sightings. These are women who get caught by the spirit of Sisterlocks and just have to fling their arms out wide in order to make enough room for their swelling heart! I usually don't have my camera ready to capture the events, ... but sometimes I do!

This is the first documented Flying Lady sighting. It dates back to our 2nd Sisterlocks Homecoming event in San Diego in Summer of 2000. If I'm not mistaken, the lovely woman in flight is Angel Okrah. Angel, are you still flying?

Below are a few more sightings from around 2020.
#1: Atlanta. The whole class was soaring!
#2: Paris, France. The ladies there are just as fired up as we are!
#3: Also Atlanta. Believe it or not, this was our guys' version of the Flying Lady. They were trying to put a masculine spin on it. (Didn't work!)

Wait! There's more!

The Flying Lady has inspired much more than weird behavior. It inspired a DOLL. See below:
#1: The original prototype, one-of-a-kind Sisterlocks Doll. (under lock & key) Dollmaker was Zonka Thompson.
#2: Production version. Around 45 total dolls made
#3: Later, a different dollmaker (Can't remember name) came up with this CTA doll.

So, that's my logo story. I welcome your comments. I'd love to know your logo story, if you have one. Or, maybe you've made a Flying Lady sighting that you'd like to share. How about if you find me a doll maker who would like to reserrect our Flying Lady Doll. I'd love that.
'Till next time,
Dr.C
